Europe Leads Organic Wine Region with 8.5 Percent Area under Cultivation
In terms of area under cultivation under organic standards, Europe leads any other region across the world. In Europe, 8.5 percent of the vineyards are organic compared to just 4.1 percent in the United States. New Zealand has 7 percent of vineyards registered under organic farming standards.
South Africa, Chile and Argentina have less than 4 percent of vineyards registered as organic. The demand for organic wine in Europe is higher compared to any other region. As per IWSR Organic Wine Report, the demand for organic wine is expected to grow by 9.2 percent annually between 2017 and 2022.
Germany can be considered as the largest market for organic wine. 6 percent of the wine consumed in Germany is organic, as per the latest IWSR data. French consumers buy 99 percent of the local organic wine produced in the country. However, the area under organic wine in France has registered a slight decline.
The cost of organic wine is nearly 38 percent more in United Kingdom, compared to same quality of non-organic wine. The sale of organic red wine accounts of 60 percent of the total volume while White Wine and Rose account for 40 percent of the sales.
“Overall, total still wine volume is increasing slightly but remains largely flat, while the organic wine market is forecasted to reach 87.5m cases by 2022,” said Mark Meek, IWSR’s CEO. “Much of that growth is being driven by Europe, which will account for 78% of the global organic wine market by 2022. The Americas will represent about 12% of total organic wine consumption.”
